The fanfiction “A Prism in the Darkness”, published by StormHerald in 2012 on TwilightArchives.com, is a story written from the perspective of a vampire who wakes up after being converted, now finding itself somewhere between past, present and future without the ability to consciously control its actions.

The first chapter “Awakening” is narrated in a metaphorical language, which is why the reader is constantly challenged as he or she progresses through the text. Thus, the story leaves great space for interpretation.

In the beginning, the atmosphere is dim as the narrator refers to the “mere necessity of darkness” in his or her entire life. The creature describes its feelings, torn between leaving the darkness and staying in it cowardly. An endless pain suffuses the creature's whole body. One gets the impression that it is in a light sleep, somewhere between being conscious of its own thoughts and its unconscious impressions.

Then the atmosphere shifts from pure pain to endless joy. The emotions are being metaphorically referred to as crystals and sparks.

The story also conveys the impression that the vampire possesses a similar ability as Edward – reading people's minds: "as I surfaced the consciousnesses of millions slammed into me" and "I struggled through the ripping, tearing battle between the billions of consciousnesses that assaulted me, and my own poor mind."

In the end, the creature describes Edward quite fabulously: "No, the crystal I was after was brilliant, as bright as the sun, as colorful as a rainbow, and overwhelming. No, I wasn’t going to chase a crystal, I was chasing a prism, a prism who had awoken me when no other entity ever had."

Finally, the narrator declares that he or she is going to look for Edward, but the purpose for this this search is not mentioned yet.

The whole narrative is written in a mystic way, using persuasive vocabulary. To my mind, it is confusing and fascinating at the same time.

Readers have to read consciously and pay much attention to the detail if they want to follow the narrator's thoughts.

The above mentioned statements are only a short version of my interpretation of the story. Due to the metaphorical language. and the abstract actions that are being described, the interpretation of the story is up to each of us.

What was your impression while reading the story?
